Tourism Marketing Update - 08.08.05

8th August 2005

Walking Campaign

The second of our walking guides, featuring 23 walks throughout the region, was launched at Durham on August 4th 2005 by Tyne Tees Television presenters Pam Royle and Bob Johnson. The walking guide looks to encourage people to visit the wide range of attractions available in the region as part of their walking experience.

We have printed 80,000 guides for distribution and the campaign is being supported by a high profile media campaign targeting people interested in walking.

National Advertising Campaign

The summer promotional activity began on July 11th 2005 and aims to encourage more visitors to the region during the summer months. The campaign combines a variety of display and classified advertising in national press and specialist magazines and over 1.5 million inserts in national media and consumer press. The campaign is supported by a considerable online presence.

New York Flights

On the 27th July 2005 Newcastle International Airport announced a new daily, scheduled service to New York's John F. Kennedy airport.  Commencing May 2006, American Airlines, the World's largest airline, will link the two cities with a non-stop service for the first time in the airport's history. One NorthEast has played a key role in bringing this first scheduled transatlantic route to the region.

The route will have an initial emphasis on business travel although we do expect a significant uptake from inbound and outbound leisure users.   One North East will be working with both Newcastle International Airport and American Airlines to target US leisure users, as well as our own domestic markets with compelling messages about holidaying in North East England.
