The LEADER Approach
New LEADER is a community led, bottom up approach to rural development and is seen by One NorthEast and DEFRA as an important way of addressing rural needs.
LEADER groups will produce Local Development Strategies and will work as partnerships called Local Action Groups to develop rural areas.
At least 25% of our total RDPE programme spend (at least £1.5m per year) will use this approach.
We’ve produced a prospectus that explains in detail how the approach will be delivered and the steps to follow if you want to be involved.
Following an expressions of interest process, 7 rural partnerships have been selected to prepare Local Development Strategies. A final selection panel will be held in March to decide which groups will be invited to deliver RDPE through the new LEADER approach.
We’ll be working with the successful groups to implement the approach on the ground, with emphasis on strong working relationships between the Agency, Local Action Groups and delivery bodies.
