Gateshead Quays
Gateshead Quays is the historic heart of Gateshead, which during the Industrial Revolution and Victorian Era became one of the focal points for industries in the North East due to its easily accessible port.
The area fell into decline in the 1970’s and 1980’s as those industries declined. Today however, Gateshead Quays is being converted into a truly unique arts and cultural space, unparalleled to anything else in Europe.
Gateshead Council and partners are dedicated to delivering a cutting edge, world-class arts, leisure and residential destination for residents and tourists alike.
BALTIC the Centre for Contemporary Art is the major centre for international contemporary art. BALTIC has a premier site on the south bank of the River Tyne and lies at the heart of Gateshead Quays regeneration area.
The Sage Gateshead opened on the 17th December 2004 and is the regions new home for music and musical discovery. The Sage Gateshead, provides unrivalled facilities for people of all ages to make music, hear music and learn music. A glass fronted public concourse and foyers links all the areas - offering spectacular views across the River Tyne. Housing a 1,650-seat concert hall, designed for acoustic superiority, it is the permanent home for the Northern Sinfonia classical orchestra and Folkworks - the folk and dance organisation.
The BALTIC and The Sage Gateshead have acted as a catalyst for the regeneration of Gateshead Quays, attracting further re-development of the area. The Hilton Hotel chain have opened a Hotel on Gateshead Quays and the area will house office space in what is being called ‘The Baltic
Business Quarter’. The area will also be home to the Design Centre for the North.
