Raising Aspirations and Attainment

It is vital to raise the ambitions and aspirations of the region’s young people, as well as their educational achievements and involvement in enterprise. A co-ordinated range of activity now links young people, schools and businesses.

To raise the aspirations and attainment of young people in the region, we will establish Schools NorthEast, a regional network of schools.

Education and skills partners will work with local authorities and children’s trusts to support the development of Schools NorthEast to maximise the critical role that schools have in addressing the economic and social needs of our region.

Activity will support schools as a sector in their own right. Schools NorthEast will ensure that we have a much more powerful method of engaging
schools with regional development as a driver for transformational change.

The causes of low attainment by young people are complex and are not simply educational. They relate strongly to peer group and neighbourhood pressures as well as generational differences. The funded activities will sit alongside the skills development programme to ensure there is a coherent approach in the region to raising the ambitions and achievements of our young people.
