Boho, Middlesbrough
Successful creative clusters have already been established such as Newcastle’s Pink Lane that provide accommodation of the right kind at the right price with appropriate business support.
Perhaps the most successful creative cluster is London’s Soho and it’s the unique ‘feel’ or ‘buzz’ of Soho that is the inspiration for this initiative – Boro’s Soho or ‘BoHo’.
The intention is for the public sector to act as a catalyst to stimulate a creative cluster around Queens Square and Exchange Square in the Victorian heart of the town, where there are currently considerable vacancy levels within older commercial properties.
One NorthEast has committed investment of c £5.8 million to the provision of c 35,000 sq ft new build & refurbished accommodation to house creative industries to sit alongside Middlesbrough Borough Councils investment in the provision of 30 live/work units. These facilities will deliver a creative core sited between the town centre and the Middlehaven project.
