Broadband
What is it?
Broadband gives you high-speed access to the Internet. It has many advantages: it is always on while your computer is in use, and it is reliable and efficient. Moreover it is up to 10 times faster than a dial-up connection, so it can support the use of interactive videos and other types of computer programmes that involve the transfer of large amounts of information.
There are three main types of broadband: cable (usually telephone lines), satellite, and wireless systems such as mobile phone networks.
How to get access to Broadband
Thanks to One NorthEast’s funding and to its staff’s efforts, the North East has now become the region with the best broadband connections outside of London. A programme was carried out to enable every telephone exchange in the North East to offer high-speed Internet access. Since March 2005 this has meant that the overwhelming majority of homes and businesses in the region have easy access to broadband services through their telephone lines.
